"Daddy Cootie" and "Coot", as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, received his formal education from Tomlinson High School, Class of 1969. In his early years of high school, he earned a certificate in Brick Masonry for many years. After graduating, Vernell made a career as a Brick Mason.

In 1967, "Coot", met the love of his life, the former, Minerva Thomas. After two years of dating, they were united in Holy Matrimony on November 22, 1969. This marriage was blessed with two sons and two adopted daughters. Vernell was a dedicated and supportive member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Kingstree, SC, where he attended faithfully until his health declined.

Vernell's hobbies were dancing, fishing, singing, gardening and spending time with his loved ones, especially his children. For his grands, he would give them the shirt off his back with no hesitation.

(Cheryl) Singletary and Tirell Singletary both of the home; two adopted daughters, Laketa McCormick of Columbia, SC and Tamara Thomas of Kingstree, SC; two sisters, Barbara (Willie) Hugee and Pearlease Scott both of Kingstree, SC; one brother, Alphonso (Rosalind) Wallace of Moncks Corner, SC; six grandchildren, Trevon Bull, Jirell Bull, Darius Chandler, Carey Singletary, Charisma Salters and Adore Carson; five great grandchildren; three brothers-in-law, William Owens, Sr. and Elder Walter Fulton both of Kingstree, SC and Theron Thomas of Philadelphia, PA; three sisters-in-law, Nancy (Willie) Williams and Betty Saffold both of Miami, FL and Agnes Witherspoon of Kingstree, SC; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
