With deepest sorrow we at Henryhand Funeral Home regret to announce the passing of Vanessa McCray, 39, of Hemingway, SC who passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

Life Reflections

Vanessa McCray was born on February 14, 1985 in Williamsburg County, South Carolina to the late Martha McCray.

Vanessa attended the public schools of Williamsburg County, graduating from Hemingway High School in 2006. She was a member of St Phillip Missionary Baptist Church in Hemingway, SC, where she accepted Christ at an early age.

On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Vanessa McCray was called to rest from the toils of this earthly life at MUSC, Florence, SC.

Vanessa was preceded in death by: her mother, Martha McCray; one brother, Vander Clifton McCray; her grandparents, Vander and Bernice McCray; along with numerous aunts, uncles and family members.

Vanessa had a bright spirit, with an infectious laugh. She was known for her boundless, kindness, creativity and unwavering determination.

Vanessa was full of life. She faithfully prayed for all her family and anyone she encountered, especially her cousin, Rosanna Kelly. She brought light into the lives of everyone she met, whether through her generosity, talent or ability to make others feel heard or understood. She loved listening to gospel music daily and dancing.

Vanessa leaves to cherish her memories: very special guardians/cousins, Donna Durant, Daniel Williams and Miracle Brooks all of the home; one brother, Edward McCray of New York City, NY; one nephew and three nieces all of New York City, NY; five aunts, Deloris Kelly of Johnsonville, SC, Viola Flower, Shirley Washington, Lillie Mae McCray and Geraldine McCray all of Hemingway, SC; one uncle, Sam Jr. McCray of Hemingway, SC; one cousin she called her daughter, Diamond Leggitt of Hemingway, SC; one cousin she called her son, Tay Jones of Florence, SC; and a host of cousins, family and friends.
