Life Reflections

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course,

I have kept the faith… II Timothy 4:7

Deacon Richard Ravenell, Sr. was born on February 7, 1941, to the late Reverend Henry Ravenell, Sr. and the late Victoria Ross Ravenell in Cross, South Carolina. Richard departed this life on March 28, 2026 at his residence.

Richard was educated through the Berkeley County public school system. Richard joined Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.

He later fell in love with the former Annie Middleton and they became one on June 22, 1963. Their union was blessed with four children, Carl, Rodney, Richard, Jr. and Shakerra. They also reared two grandchildren in their home, Sherdick and Donovan.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his son, Carl Ravenell; four brothers, Isaac, Robert, Jacob, and Walter, Sr.; and two sisters, Catherine Sheryl Ravenell and Margaret King.

On March 1, 1979, Richard became a valuable teacher as the masonry instructor and coach at Cross High School. "Coach Rav" as he was affectionately called, cared for his Cross Community. For twenty-four years he dedicated his life to helping and caring for the children of Cross. He loved football and baseball. He was most proud of his JV team that won the championship game. In his spare time, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

His life was a testament to what it means to serve with purpose and lead with heart. His spirit remains present in the lives he shaped, the seeds he planted, and the legacy he leaves behind.

Richard leaves to cherish his precious memories: his loving wife, Annie Ravenell; two daughters, Ella Reid of Atlanta, GA and Shakerra  Ravenell of Columbia, SC; two sons, Rodney Ravenell and Richard Ravenell both of Cross, SC; four sisters, Geraldine Smith, Ruth (Bennett) Vanish, Reverend Mae Liza Grant, and Mary Haynes; two brothers, Timothy (Deloise) Ravenell and Henry (Linda) Ravenell, Jr.; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Kim Ravenell; one brother-in-law, Joseph Middleton; one sisters-in-law, Shirley Shears and Brandy (Harry) Gadson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family is receiving friends and family at 297 Rodenberry Rd., Cross, SC
