Obituary

With deepest sorrow we at Henryhand Funeral Home regret to announce the passing of Reverend Richard McClary, 76, husband of Alberta McClary of Kingstree, SC, who passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

In Loving Memory of Reverend Richard McClary

My God my strength in whom I will trust.

Psalm 18:2

Reverend Richard McClary was born on May 23, 1950 to the late Willie and Lizzie McClary. He was preceded in death by: two brothers, Bishop Willie Joe McClary and Minister John Edward McClary; one sister, Marie McClary; and one son, Jason L. McClary

He was a graduate of St. Mark High School, Class of 1969. He also was a graduate of Duke University School of Divinity.

Reverend McClary was formerly employed by Baxter Travenol and Booth Pharmaceutical Companies.

Reverend McClary was a former member of Friendship United Methodist Church until he was led by God to become a minister of the Gospel on June 9, 2002. While at Friendship United Methodist Church, he was a faithful and loyal steward of many auxiliaries, such as Methodist Men Circle #3, Adult Class, Sunday School Teacher, and PPRC Committee.

Upon becoming a licensed minister, his first appointment was Kennedyville United Methodist Church of Nesmith, South Carolina. Later, he became the pastor of both Wilson and Longbranch United Methodist Churches of Greeleyville, South Carolina.

Reverend McClary was a kind and gentle man. He loved people, his family, and helping others. Most of all, he loved the quiet moments on his produce truck. Reverend McClary always quoted that "His greatest achievement was when he accepted Jesus Christ in his life."

On November 26, 1972 he was married to Alberta Nesmith McClary. In this beloved union, they were blessed with five wonderful children.

Loved ones left to cherish his memories are: his loving and devoted wife, Alberta Nesmith McClary; children, Valarie Nesmith, Don McClary, Terence (Denee) McClary, and Richard R. McClary, Jr; a granddaughter reared in the home, LaKeisha Scott; his siblings, Marguerite McCrea, Rebecca (Cicero) McCrea, Martha (Edward) Graham, Elder Lee Roy McClary, Sam McClary, and Raymond McClary; sisters-in-law, Betty Ashley, Edna Nesmith and Janice Nesmith; brothers-in-law, Bobby (Patricia) Nesmith and Tommy (Annie) Nesmith; one uncle, Isaac (Ella Mae) McClary; sixteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a special daughter, Stephanie Bradley; a very close friend, Sammy Richardson; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
