With deepest sorrow we at Henryhand Funeral Home regret to announce the passing of Rebecca Johnson Sumpter, 95, of Pineville, SC, formerly of St. Stephen, SC, widow of William Sumpter Sr., who passed away on Monday,  April 27, 2026.

The Life & Legacy Of

Ms. Rebecca Johnson Sumpter, was born on August 10, 1930, in Kingstree, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Lee Johnson and Anna T. Golden. She was reared in Bonneau, South Carolina by her oldest sister, Anna L. Pinckney. Rebecca, who was affectionately known as "Beck departed her earthly home on Monday, April 27, 2026.

Rebecca was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County. She accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of St. Peters A.M.E. Church in Bonneau, SC. She later became a member at St. Peters Baptist Church in Pineville, SC.

Rebecca was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Mr. William Sumpter Sr. on November 30, 1946, to this union twelve children were born and they also adopted six children., They were foster parents to one hundred children. "Beck" had a passion for loving and taking care of children in the neighborhood and everywhere else. She had a passion for cooking, baking, canning, and growing flowers.

Rebecca was preceded in death by: her late husband, Mr. William Sumpter Sr.; one son, Antonio Sumpter; her parents, Mr. Lee Johnson and Ms. Anna T. Golden; four sisters, Ms. Anna Lee Pinckney, Ms. Elise Hunter, Ms. Emma Nan Geddis and Ms. Mary McClennon.

"Beck" leaves to cherish her loving and lasting memories: her seventeen children, William (Betty) Sumpter of Moncks Corner, SC, Alfonso Sumpter, Willie (MaryAnn) Sumpter and Robert (Johnnie Ruth) Sumpter all of St. Stephen, SC, Mary Rembert of Pineville, SC, Alester (Evangelist Cynthia) Sumpter, Jerome (Tammie) Sumpter, Jesse James (Marilyn) Sumpter, Nathaniel Sumpter, Melvin Sumpter, Cynthia (Deacon Palmer) Hartwell, George (Cindy) Sumpter and William III (Princillia) Sumpter all of St. Stephen, SC, Shirley (Jacque) Lucas of Pineville, SC, Tyheisha Sumpter and Tyrone (Kadejah) Sumpter both of St. Stephen, SC; one lovely sister, Ms. Rosa Lee Bailey of Flower Mound, TX; a multitude of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The family is receiving friends and family at 358 Amelia Rd, Pineville, SC, from 3pm - 7pm on Tuesday - Thursday.
