Life Reflections

Dr. Patricia Alford Gibbs was born on July 3, 1941, and entered into eternal rest on September 14, 2026. Her 85 years were devoted to God, family, and education.

Patricia was born in Lake City, South Carolina, to Mathew and Virginia Johnson Alford, Patricia was the oldest child and oldest grandchild of the Alford family. From an early age, she possessed a strong sense of self, a remarkable work ethic, and a determination to excel.

Patricia was educated in the public schools of Lake City during the era of segregation in the Jim Crow South. She graduated from Carver High School and attended Claflin College, where she completed a dual degree in science in four years. She later pursued studies at Fisk University and worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and as a chemist at the Charleston Naval Weapons Station.

Her passion for education led to a distinguished career teaching mathematics and science in the Berkeley County School District for more than 35 years. A leader, mentor, and lifelong learner, Dr. Gibbs encouraged others to pursue higher education and professional growth.
Leading by example, she earned her Ph.D. in Science while in her sixties.

Her faith remained at the center of her life. She joined Wesley United Methodist Church in Lake City at an early age and later faithfully served Wesley United Methodist Church in Moncks Corner, where she served in leadership and helped foster the Prayer Ministry.

Patricia was married to Washington Gibbs Jr., who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a son, a stepdaughter, and her two brothers. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Anthony; daughter, Patrice; and a host of family members, friends, former students, colleagues, and loved ones.

Dr. Gibbs leaves a lasting legacy of faith, excellence, perseverance, service, and education. The many lives she touched will continue to reflect the remarkable life she lived.
