~Life Reflections
Naomi "Peanut" Hannah, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and woman of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 25, 2025, in Brooklyn, New York. She was 92 years old.
Born on August 16, 1932, in Lake City, South Carolina, Naomi was the beloved daughter of Missouri and Harry Cameron. She was raised in a loving home alongside her siblings and attended Camerontown High School in Lake City. From an early age, Naomi developed a deep connection to her faith while attending Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she would later return to serve as Church Treasurer after moving back to South Carolina in her later years.
In 1950, Naomi married her first love, Pattie Eugene Hannah. Together they began building a life centered around family and love. After his untimely passing, Naomi made the courageous decision in 1958 to move from Lake City to Brooklyn, New York with the dream of creating a better future for her children. Her journey through life was marked by resilience and determination. Though she suffered a traumatic hand injury while working in a factory, she refused to let adversity define her path. Instead, she kept her faith in her God and her eyes on her dream to have a successful family filled life. Her dream led her to enroll in The Brooklyn Hospital School of Nursing where she later became a Licensed Registered Nurse—a testament to her strength and perseverance.
Throughout her time in Brooklyn, Naomi lived at several addresses that included at 102 Liberty Ave, 35 Weirfield St, 115 Herzl St, and 696 Cleveland St. before purchasing the family home at 193 Franklin Avenue in 1965. At her Franklin Avenue home, she built a foundation for her family and provided a safety net for many other family members and friends. Her home at Franklin Avenue became the heart of her extended family—a place of warmth, safety, and enduring memories. Her Franklin Avenue community in Bedford-Stuyvesant remained dear to her heart for decades.
In 1997, Naomi returned to South Carolina and purchased a home in Kingstree to be closer to her family, her roots, and her cherished church community at Bethel A.M.E. Church. It was during this time that she married longtime friend Wilbert "Rolling Stone" Speights. Eventually, she returned once more to New York to be near her children and grandchildren during her final years.
Naomi's life was grounded in faith and family. She began each day with reading her Bible and having quiet time with God. Her love for scripture guided every step she took and her morning prayers and the words of God, protected her family and those she loved even when they didn't understand that they needed to pray from themselves. She found joy in simple pleasures—shopping trips, watching *Wheel of Fortune*, solving crossword puzzles, and reading books. Holidays were especially meaningful to her; Thanksgiving was a times when she brought everyone together under one roof to create lasting memories filled with laughter and love, and Christmas was a time she created magical moments that will live in the minds of her loved ones forever.
Naomi is survived by: five sons, Bobby E. Hannah, Davis Hannah, Charles Hannah, Pattie R. Hannah and Derwin Hannah; one daughter, KaSabre S. Williams; daughters-in-law, Jewel "Cookie" Hannah, Danielle Hannah, Brenda Hannah and Ann Hannah; son-in-law, Lee A. Williams; thirteen grandchildren, Adonis Hannah, J.R. Hannah, Charles-Martin Hannah (and his wife Ernestine), Lucien Hannah, Paris Hannah, Marquise Hannah, Dervon Browne, Shawin Browne, Letara Browne, Bryce Browne, Malasia Apparicio, Cameron Apparicio, and Sky Williams; five great-grandchildren, Charlee Hannah, Kylee Naomi Hannah, Charles Mason Hannah, Trinitee Browne and Lygia Browne.
She is also remembered lovingly by her three brothers: Willie Cameron, Paul Cameron, and David Cameron; one sister: Genevieve "Tootie" Singletary; goddaughter Vanette "Vicky" Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends—and especially the Franklin Avenue community that embraced her as one of their own.
Naomi was preceded in death by: her parents, Missouri and Harry Cameron; her first husband, Pattie Eugene Hannah; son, Obedie Hannah; her second husband, Wilbert Speights; five brothers; two sisters; one daughter-in-law; and many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Naomi "Peanut" Hannah leaves behind a legacy of strength rooted in faith and nurtured through family. Her life's journey—from Lake City to Brooklyn and back again—was marked by courage and her enduring devotion to those she loved most.
May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
