Kingstree
With deepest sorrow we at Henryhand Funeral Home regret to announce the passing of Mildred Stith, 93, of Kingstree, SC, widow of the late Floyd Henry Stith, who passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
Life Reflections
Mildred Lucile Stith, daughter of the late John and Mary Salters, was born October 9, 1932, in Kingstree, South Carolina.
Mildred began her education at Tomlinson High School in the town of Kingstree, South Carolina. After graduating from high school, Mildred got a job cooking and serving lunch at the neighborhood elementary school until she decided to move to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to further her education. She left the town of Kingstree in the Spring of 1952. On her way to Philadelphia, the conductor of the train tried to move her upfront to a better seat so he said, and he also wanted to know the address to where he was going to live. Her first job in Philadelphia was as a short order cook in a small restaurant around the corner from where she lived. She saved her money and enrolled in the Philadelphia School of Nursing. She worked nights and attended school during the day. She didn't always have the money for school, but the school told her to come in anyway, because she had an A average. After graduating from Nursing School, Mildred went to New York one summer to visit a relative who was working private duty nursing. Her job seemed interesting and paid well, so she registered at the agency and was called to begin working that Fall. She traveled back and forth between Philadelphia and New York, until she eventually moved to New York. Pediatric Nursing was her passion. She worked with most of the leading Pediatricians throughout New York and New Jersey, and the surrounding areas.
In June 1958, Mildred was united in Holy Matrimony in Brooklyn, New York with the late Floyd Henry Stith, the love of her life. This union was blessed with two children, and the family settled in Brooklyn. After the children matured, Mildred continued her education. She enrolled in college and obtained a degree in Early Childhood Education. By then, grandchildren were beginning to join the family and she spent a lot her time doting and enjoying them. Midred was a hands on mom and was always available for her children in their formative years. She felt that no one could do for the job as well as she could. She enjoyed cooking, cleaning and sewing for her family. Anticipating her husband's retirement in a few years, they relocated to Bergenfield, NJ in 1988. They enjoyed living there, but eventually her husband's health began to decline and the decision was made to move back to Mildred's hometown of Kingstree, SC. There she tenderly and faithfully cared for her late husband until his death on January 18, 2014.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her late husband; her loving daughter, Kodenn Stith; along with eight siblings.
Mildred leaves to cherish her loving memories: her son, Floyd Lee Stith of Brooklyn, NY; five grandchildren, Jamel Stith, Shameka Stith, Yasmin Stith, Messiah Stith, and Madison Stith; five great-grandchildren; her two sisters, Leona S. McAlister and Florence Nesbit; two brothers, Willie Salters and Nathaniel Salters all of Kingstree, SC; three sisters-in-law, Maebell Salters of Virgina Beach, VA, Pauline Salters Brown of Miami, FL and Anna Lee Salters of Lane, SC; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
