Mark Anthony
Dorsey
Nov 25, 1957 — May 4, 2025
Hemingway
With deepest sorrow we at Henryhand Funeral Home regret to announce the passing Mark Anthony Dorsey, 67, of Hemingway, SC, husband of Phairleanette Dorsey, who passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
A Journey Begins…
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." ~Proverbs 3:5-6~
Mr. Mark Anthony Dorsey Sr, son of the late Furney Dorsey, Jr. and the late Mary Burroughs Dorsey Downs was born on November 25, 1957 in Manhattan, New York. On Sunday, May 4, 2025, after a well fought battle with ALS, Mark answered the Master's call and entered into eternal rest.
"Mack", as he was affectionately called, was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County and was a 1975 graduate of Battery Park High School. In 1975, Mark enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he served honorably for 32 years before retiring. Throughout his career, Mark held several positions, including a role with the International Longshoremen's Association in Charleston, South Carolina, where he worked until his illness led to retirement.
At an early age, Mark accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and became a member of Greater Mt. Ararat A.M.E. Church in Nesmith, SC. Following his union in marriage with his beloved wife, Phairleanette, they joined Nesmith Way of the Cross Church, where Mark served faithfully in numerous capacities. He was a devoted Deacon, President of Youth for Christ, Youth Sunday School Teacher, and Chairman of the Trustee Board. At the time of his transition, Mark was a dedicated member of Greater St. Peter Apostolic Faith Church, where he worshiped under the leadership of Bishop James Rush. His unwavering faith and commitment to service were evident throughout his life and will remain an inspiration to all who knew him.
On February 28, 1981, Mark was united in Holy Matrimony to Phairleanette McCullough. To this union, they were blessed with four children. Mark was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and dear friend. He had a special gift for making people laugh and took great joy in bringing others together in fellowship. Mark was generous in both spirit and action—always willing to give and help in any way he could. One of his passions was teaching others how to swim, a reflection of his caring and patient nature.
He also loved traveling, fishing, baking, singing, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, and, above all, worshiping God and spending quality time with his family. Mark's warmth, humor, and selflessness touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Morris and Evelyn Brunson, a bonus mom.
Those left to cherish his loving memories are: his loving and devoted wife, Phairleanette M. Dorsey of the home; four loving children, Mark (Lorrine) Dorsey Jr., of Orlando, FL, Terrance (Latasha) Dorsey of Hemingway, SC, Senaii Dorsey of the home, and Miranda (Joshua) Smalls of Florence, SC; one grandson he reared in the home as his own, Freddie A. Johnson Jr, seven additional grandchildren, Kemya, Naszir, Nyla, Terrance Jr, Taj, Joshua Jr, and Jackson; four bonus grandchildren, John, David, Jonathan, and Aaron; one great-grandchild, Kordell; five sisters, Denise D. Thomas of Covington, GA, Barbara D. Sarr of New York, Andronetta Dorsey of New York, Patty Dorsey of New York and Theresa Dorsey of New York; four brothers, Vincent (Lou) Dorsey, of Raleigh, NC, Derrick (Sandra) Dorsey of Charleston, SC, Furney Dorsey III of Charleston, SC and Jody Barbour of Charleston, SC; two uncles, Harold (Carrie) Dorsey of Nesmith, SC and David Burroughs of Hamden, CT; five aunts, Jannie D. Green of Florence, SC, Vernerva (Gregory) Palmer and Irene Joann Dorsey both of Nesmith, SC, Sue Hunt of New York and Merlene Dorsey of Florida; four sisters-in-law, Drucilla McCullough of Lorton, VA, Sarah McCullough of Salters, SC, Carolyn (Stoney) McClary of Kingstree, SC and Demetra McCullough of Spartanburg, SC; two brothers-in-law, Levon (Arlene) Evans and Alvin (Carrie) Evans; one special niece, LaVosha Davis Redd; along with a host of great aunts, great uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
