Life Reflections
"I have lived out my days on this earth. I've lived such a beautiful life with my family and friends, now I must go on a new journey to heaven where I must spend eternal life with the Lord. Rejoice for me my family and friends for I am at PEACE". - Vern
In His infinite wisdom, God saw fit to call home Luther "Vern" Cunningham Jr. to eternal rest on Monday, February 2, 2026, at MUSC Hospital in Florence, South Carolina. Born on November 3, 1963, in Kingstree, South Carolina, Luther was the son of the late Luther Cunningham Sr. and Margaret Brand Cunningham. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County and accepted Christ as his Lord and personal Savior, attending services at Number One Holiness Church in Cades, South Carolina. Luther was preceded in death by: three sisters, Mary, Shonnette, and Jeannette Cunningham and three brothers, Irvin, Doward, and Michael Cunningham.
Being no stranger to hard work, Luther retired in 2022 with over 30 years of dedicated service in medical transportation. His career was marked by his most recent role as an Emergency Medical Technician and Driver for First Choice Ambulance, Inc. of Lake City, SC. His extensive professional journey also included time with First Care, Williamsburg County Transit, Adams Life Link, Wilson Transport, and the infamous Ken-Co Mobile Homes. Luther loved interacting with all his patients and customers; through his infectious personality and jokes, they somehow became a part of his extended family.
Affectionately called "Vern," "Moe," "Ol Top," or "Cowboy," Luther was an extremely cheerful and giving person who was the life of the party at any and every family event. He loved his family deeply and would help anyone in need of a ride. An active sportsman, he was an incredible softball player and a die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan—win or lose! However, if they lost, his loved ones knew there was no need to call his phone because he simply was not answering.
In May of 1997, Luther married the love of his life, Linda Hammond, of the home in Lake City, SC. Along with his loving and devoted wife, he leaves to cherish his memory: two loving daughters, Asia Cunningham of the home and Sharon Tisdale of Kingstree, SC; six sons, Joey Cunningham, Leterion (Roxanne) Cunningham and Luther Cunningham all of Myrtle Beach, SC; Bryan Fleming of Fort Myers, FL, William Fleming of Sumter, SC and Ronald Pressley of Kingstree, SC. He also leaves behind: his "heart," a special grandson, Wise Fulmore of the home; ten beautiful grandchildren whom he adored, Jiwaun, Niquan, Ariyonna, Syesha, Ny'Asia, Catrel, Chy'Trell, Ca'Shya, Leterin, and Jyanna.
Luther is survived by: a devoted sister, Dorothy C. Fulton of Lake City, SC; four concerned brothers, James (Gloria) Cunningham of Kingstree, SC, Leroy (Jillian) Cunningham, Christopher (Teresa) Cunningham and Derrick Cunningham all of Myrtle Beach, SC. He will be fondly remembered by: two special nieces, Theresa Cunningham of Kingstree, SC and Erica (Dewitt) Clark of Florence, SC; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Martha (Larry) Hugee, Carolyn Gathers and Connie Hammond all of Florence, SC, Ella Brown and Sampson Hanna both of Lake City, SC; a special sister-in-law, Theresa Cunningham of Kingstree, SC. His memory is further honored by: special cousins, Dennis Brand, Anna Epps, Cheryl Bell and all of the Brand Brothers; as well as special friends, Willie Chandler, Tyrone Cooper, Drequin Feagin, Benjamin (Tasha) Miner, Doug Paige and Teddy Bear, along with a host of special cousins, nieces, nephews, numerous relatives and dear friends.
All arrangements and professional services have been entrusted to Henryhand Funeral Home of Lake City, SC - 843-354-2292.
