Life Reflections
Those we love don't go away, they are beside us everyday, unseen, unheard, but always near, so missed.
On Saturday morning, October 3, 2026, our Heavenly Father stepped into His garden and picked a beautiful flower named Laurie J. and took him home.
Laurie J. Cunningham, Jr. was born June 7, 1937 to the late Laurie Cunningham and Mary Pressley. Laurie J was preceded in death by: his parents; four brothers, Paul, Walter, Albert and Harry Cunningham; three sisters, Dorothy M. Nesmith, Mae Pearl Graham and Burrie C. Fleming and one daughter, Gwendolyn Cunningham.
Laurie J graduated from Battery Park High School, Nesmith, South Carolina, Class of 1958. After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Rachel Gibson and they moved to New York City. They were blessed with four daughters. While in New York, he was a delivery truck driver for many years, then he went into business for himself, opening a restaurant/bar named, Fish and Chip, where he operated until he relocated back to South Carolina.
Laurie J was dedicated and his nurturing spirit touched the lives of many countless children and families.
Laurie J was also pivotal in the lives of many of his nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. His wisdom, humor and unwavering support, when he moved back home he started investing in livestocks, gardening and vegetables.
Laurie J's motto was "helping people." His motivational quote was "continue to try be the best version of yourself."
Laurie J leaves behind to cherish his memory: his wife, Vannie Cunningham of 27 years; four daughters, Rhonda Cunningham of Andrews, SC, Camilla Joyner of Philadelphia, PA, Cynthia Bennett (William) and June Hinnant both of New York City, NY; four grandchildren, Andrea Morris (Michelle) and Niana Joyner both of Philadelphia, PA, Allen Campbell and Raquel Campbell both of New York City, NY; seven great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Scott Nesmith of Kingstree, SC; four sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; four friends, Steve Wilson, Jim Jones, Ronald Pressley and Gwendolyn Bryant; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
I fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. The pain that I've endured can't compare to the joy that's coming.
The family will receive family and friends at 10995 Hemingway Highway, Kingstree, SC.
