Life Reflections
Mr. Jefferson Boyd Tompkins, affectionately known as "JB", was born on June 25, 1959, to the union of Mr. Samuel Tompkins, Sr., and Mrs. Ester Mae Johnson in Georgetown, South Carolina. His parents and two siblings, Samuel Tompkins Jr. and Hazel Tompkins Williams all preceded him in death. During his formative years, JB received his education in the public schools of Georgetown County. He graduated from Andrews High School in 1977. Following his education, JB embarked on a successful career as a truck driver for over 40 years, ultimately establishing his own trucking business. Known for his reliability and commitment, he built strong relationships within the industry. At the time of his passing, JB was employed by the Georgetown County Park & Recreation Department, where he contributed his skills and work ethic to the community he cherished.
Hard work and dedication to his profession and the people around him left a lasting impact that will be remembered by many. His spiritual journey began at the Alpha Apostolic Holiness Church, where he was nurtured under the guidance of the Late Bishop B.F. Graham, known for his strong faith, and Overseer Elder Johnny McCray, whose mentorship helped solidify his spiritual foundation. Following his impactful tenure at Alpha Apostolic Holiness Church, he became a member of the House of Prayer Church of God in Christ Jesus under the leadership of Bishop Jimmie Smith. Here, he continued to deepen his spiritual commitment, serving diligently as a Deacon. Additionally, he showcased his musical talent as the guitarist, adding a rich layer of praise and worship to the church services and fostering a spirit of unity and joy among the congregation.
JB was an exceptionally talented and well-respected guitarist, renowned for his passionate playing style and deep understanding of music. His journey with the acoustic guitar began at a young age, fostered by the influence of his mother, the Late Ester Mae Tompkins and his uncle Morris Collins. They introduced him to the instrument, nurturing his natural aptitude and igniting a lifelong love for music. His first church his played for was St. Rose Holiness Church, under the leadership of his grandparents the Late Pastor Etta Wilson Johnson and Elder James Johnson. As he grew, JB became a self-taught musician, dedicating countless hours to honing his skills. His devotion to the guitar was not just a personal pursuit; he felt a calling to share his knowledge and passion with others. JB became a beloved figure in the community, generously instructing many aspiring musicians who sought guidance on mastering the instrument.
JB's reputation as a guitarist extended far beyond his local area. JB was in high demand, performing at numerous churches throughout Georgetown County and even venturing into neighboring regions. His ability to connect with audiences through his music made him a cherished musician in various worship services and events. JB took on a leadership role as the manager of the Gospel Willlites. This prominent quartet group ministers the gospel through song and inspires many with their uplifting music, praising God. Under his guidance, the group flourished, and together they brought joy and spiritual enrichment to their listeners for many years. JB's legacy as a musician mentor continues to resonate within the hearts of those he touched with his artistry and generosity. On January 28, 1980, JB was united in holy matrimony to Ms. Carrol J. Waye. From this union three children were born Andre, Syreeta and Antoine "Craig".
On Saturday, September 20, 2025, our beloved JB peacefully departed from this world to his eternal home in glory. He took his final breath at Tidelands Memorial Hospital, surrounded by the warmth and love of family and friends. JB's legacy of kindness, laughter, and unwavering spirit will forever be cherished in our hearts.
