With deepest sorrow we at Henryhand Funeral Home regret to announce the passing of Jannie M. Sumter, 87, of Lane, SC, widow of late Joe Sumter, Jr., who passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025.
Life Reflections
Jannie Wiese Myers Sumter was born on January 17, 1938 to Willie and Bertha Parson Myers in Lane, South Carolina. On April 19, 2025, Jannie entered eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication.
A proud graduate of the Williamsburg Training Class of 1956, Jannie was an active member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Gourdin, SC, where she was an Emeritus member of the usher board. In 2024, she was honored to serve as the mother of the church. Jannie also enjoyed a successful entrepreneurial career, running her own business for over fifty years. She was known for her love of gardening, fishing, and for her legendary barbeque pork, which people traveled from miles around to enjoy.
Jannie was preceded in death by: her parents, Willie and Bertha Myers; her husband, Joe Sumter Sr., and her sisters, Victoria Benbow and Sylvia Keels.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Frederick (Ella) Sumter, Willie (Barbara) Sumter and Valencia Ravenel all of Lane, SC and Kenneth (Mami) Sumter of Fayetteville, NC; eleven grandchildren, Frederick (Lakesha) Sumter Jr. and Felicia Kelty both of Columbia, SC, Dr. Letichia Gallishaw and Terence Sumpter both of Lane, SC, Eric Sumter of Kenosha, WI, Kenneth, Xavier and Corinthian Sumter both of Prince George, VA, Termaine (Kim) Sumter of Lithonia, GA, Davon (Amber) Gallishaw of Baumholder, Germany and Joshetta Scott of Kingstree, SC; thirteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one beloved aunt, Mariah Williams of Orange, NJ; one brother-in-law, Robert Lee (Queen) Sumter of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Sumter of Jacksonville, FL and Travis Sumter of St. Petersburg, FL; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Special thanks to her dear cousin, Acie Childers, as well as Amos & The Matthews Family, who held a special place in her heart. Jannie's friendship with Alberta Knox of New Jersey and Katherine Bright of Kingstree, SC was also deeply cherished.
Though her physical presence will be missed, Jannie's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Her unwavering faith, boundless love for her family, and dedication to her community have left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to have been touched by her. We take comfort in knowing that she now rests in the peace and presence of our Lord.
"Well done, good and faithful servant."
May her soul rest in eternal peace!
The family is receiving friends and family at her late residence, 57 Gourdin Road, Lane, SC.
