James Prioleau,
Jr.
Oct 23, 1932 — Nov 16, 2024
Oakland
With deepest sorrow we at Henryhand Funeral Home regret to announce the passing of James Prioleau, Jr., 92, of Oakland, CA, formerly of Pineville, SC, a retired Army Veteran, husband of Celia O. Prioleau, who passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
October 23, 1932 – November 16, 2024
James Prioleau Jr., the youngest of eleven children, was born to James Prioleau Sr. and Marie Wilson Prioleau. A proud descendant of enslaved people from James Island, South Carolina. He spent his formative years in Pineville, South Carolina. James carried forward a legacy of resilience and strength.
James honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, with deployments in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During his military service, he also distinguished himself as a skilled boxer, earning respect and admiration from his peers. He was also a proud Prince Hall Mason, embodying the principles of brotherhood and service throughout his life.
James found joy in life's simple moments—Sunday family dinners, leisurely walks through his neighborhood, and evenings spent sharing his wealth of stories. His love of music and gift for storytelling brought warmth and wisdom to those who gathered around him, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Celia Prioleau; his son, Anthony Prioleau; his daughter, Marcia Rayford; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces nephews and cousins.
James was a pillar of strength and love, and his passing leaves an indelible void in the lives of his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Martin Luther King Jr. Rally Committee, an organization James was instrumental in founding, reflecting his lifelong commitment to service and social justice.
James Prioleau Jr. will forever remain in our hearts.
May he rest in peace.
All arrangements and professional services have been entrusted to Henryhand Funeral Home of St. Stephen, SC. 843-354-2292.
