Life Reflections

Deacon Franklin Wilder, affectionately known as Sonny Boy, peacefully passed away at the age of 89 on February 6, 2025, at his home. Born on July 9, 1935, to Bessie and Henry Wilder, Franklin was raised in the public schools of Berkeley County. He accepted Christ at a young age at St. Stephen Baptist Church, where he later became a dedicated deacon.

Throughout his life, Franklin worked tirelessly, with a career that included roles at Harold's Lumber Yard, the Highway Department, Santee River Wood, Saint Stephen Powerhouse, the Town of Saint Stephen, and Saint Stephen Knit Wear. In 1959, he married Ruthie Mae Wilder, and together they raised eight loving children.

Franklin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family, tending to his home, and taking care of his vehicles. A passionate gardener and avid fisherman, he also loved cutting the grass and maintaining his yard. Though Franklin didn't speak many words, his actions and the bond he shared with his wife of 65 years spoke volumes. He was the unwavering pillar of his family, guiding them with strength and love.

"Sonny Boy" was a father not only to his own children, but also to many who sought his guidance and care. His heart was pure, and he was always ready to offer help to anyone in need. His devotion to his family and his selfless spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Franklin was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Henry Wilder; his brothers, Elliot, Thomas, and Melvin Wilder; his sisters, Lilly Mae Milford, Daisy Woods, Dell Bryant, and Gracie Mouzon; his brother-in-law; Deacon Samuel Milford Sr., his daughter, Alberta Gilliard; daughter-in-law, Angela Deloris Wilder; and special granddaughter, Latoya Shanta Wilder.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and remembrance, cherished by: his devoted wife, Ruthie Mae Wilder; his children, Ruthie Dean Harrington, Catharine Wilder, Deacon Franklin Leroy Wilder, Janett Herrington, Amanda Gayle Kennedy, Darral Lamont Wilder and Bryan Anthony (Shamieka) Davis; his sisters-in-law; Geraldine McFadden and Ernestine Wilder; his son-in-law, Anthony Gilliard; 20 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Franklin's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and his life will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
