Life Reflections

"Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."
Matthew 25:23 (KJV)

Mother Elizabeth Fulton Burgess, beloved daughter of the late John and Mary Bradley Fulton, was born on August 3, 1936, in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. She peacefully transitioned to her eternal home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

Elizabeth attended the public schools of Williamsburg County and was raised in the Holiness faith. She was a devoted member of Macedonia Holiness Church in her early years and accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. Later, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she resided for more than 25 years and worked faithfully in the manufacturing industry until her retirement. After retiring, she returned home and reunited with St. Matthews Holiness Church, where she served diligently and wholeheartedly.

A willing and dedicated worker in the church, Mother Elizabeth served in many capacities, including class leader, kitchen supervisor, missionary department officer, senior choir member, and senior mother board.

Mother Elizabeth was known for her easy-going friendly spirit, wide brim hats, and joyful laughter, which allowed her to make friends effortlessly. She was compassionate, selfless, and always willing to lend a helping hand. Though she never sought the spotlight, she constantly encouraged others to do their best. She possessed a distinctive, jazzy singing voice that ushered in the Spirit during worship services. She loved participating in soul-stirring services and often ended her testimony by expressing her desire to be "the daughter that Jesus was looking for," reflecting her sincere commitment to living a faithful Christian life.

Elizabeth was united in marriage to Mr. JoeNathan Burgess, who preceded her in death.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Gussie Geneva Burgess, Corinne Burgess, and Alma Ruth Wallace; and five brothers, Roosevelt, George Herbert (Snook), Odell, James, Sammie Davis, and John Fulton, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory: one sister, Earline Graham of Florence, South Carolina; one brother, William Tab Fulton of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; one sister-in-law, Rosa Fulton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and dear friends. Special consideration and sincere thanks to the Spates' family: Linda, Alice and Gabby. Truly, Mother Elizabeth's presence will be deeply missed, and her legacy of faith and love will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."

2 Timothy 4:7–8 (KJV)
