With deepest sorrow we at Henryhand Funeral Home regret to announce the passing of Deacon James Timothy Mayes, 88, of St. Stephen, SC, who passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026.

Life Reflections

My wings were ready but your hearts was not, my departure was approved by God. I fought a good fight and kept the faith; I've finished my course.

James T. Mayes was born on September 12, 1937, in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, to the late Sam Peter and Vernita Mayes.

Deacon James Mayes attended school in Lake City, South Carolina. In 1957 he moved to Miami, Florida, where he was employed as a construction worker. In 1961, he became a Long Shoreman, during that time he met and married Carolyn Brady Mayes. To that union a son was born, Glenn R. Mayes Sr.

While residing in Miami, he attended First Baptist Church of Bunch Park, where he sung with the Male Chorus as well as Choir #2. In 2003, he relocated back to South Carolina, where he began attending Goodwill Freewill Baptist Church. He later moved his membership to St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon as well as a member of the choir until God called him from his labor to his reward.

Deacon James T. Mayes leaves to cherish his memories; one son, Glenn R. Mayes Sr. (Cassandra); one daughter, Theia Graham; Carolyn Brady Mayes; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one sister, Willa Mae Chisholm; very special friend, Otto Steele; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

All arrangements and professional services have been entrusted to Henryhand Funeral Home of St. Stephen, SC. 843-354-2292.
