Life Reflections
Ms. Darlene Lavette Broughton, daughter of John and Roberta Broughton, was born September 15, 1976, in Charleston, South Carolina. She departed this life on September 3, 2026.
She was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County School District graduating from St. Stephen High School as the Valedictorian with the Class of 1994. She continued her education at Clemson University, in Clemson, SC where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. During her three-decade long career with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, she rose through the organization and served as the Resident Construction Engineer for the Charleston Construction field office. She recently took on the position as a Special Project Engineer overseeing the I-95 Fix The Drive Improvement Project. Darlene also earned her Master of Business Administration from Webster University in 2005.
Darlene's faith was birthed as a young child attending St. Matthews Baptist Church. She later joined Day Dawn Baptist Church where she was baptized. Throughout her time at Clemson University, she actively sang and participated with the Clemson University Gospel Choir. While working for SCDOT in Columbia, she joined Brookland Baptist Church and sang with the Charles B. Jackson Singers Choir.
Darlene was a committed member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. at Clemson University (Omicron Phi) in the Spring of 1997. She was the immediate past president of the Berkeley County Alumnae Chapter and was serving as the treasurer. Her presence in Delta spanned well beyond the local level. She was in the inaugural Delta Pearls program in the South Atlantic Region, and she was in the inaugural Delta Fellows Cohort on the national level. She was an active member of the Regional Leadership Team, an integral leader on the regional reactivation team, and served as a trainer for the Delta Internal Development program. She also served on the Regional Nominating Committee.
Darlene's life was a testament to family, legacy, and justice. She served on the Center for Heirs' Property Board of Directors as a Board Member, Board Secretary and Fundraising Committee Chair. She also served as a board member of Ignite Tech Youth, regularly volunteering at the organization's summer camps and programs.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her father and mother, John and Roberta Broughton; siblings, Derwin (Michele) Broughton and Dana Broughton; a nephew, Jonathan Broughton; a niece, Kina Broughton; two aunts, Pathenia Barnes and Nancy Moore; a grandaunt, Rebecca Madeline Gaillard; a host of cousins, sorority sisters, colleagues, classmates and friends.
