THE LIFE AND LEGACY of
Betty Elizabeth McFadden White-Gordon
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Revelations 21:4
Betty Elizabeth McFadden White-Gordon, the daughter of the late Hester and Adam McFadden, was born in Williamsburg County on October 13, 1940. On Monday, May 11, 2026, the Lord quietly whispered, "Come unto Me," and Betty Elizabeth McFadden White-Gordon peacefully departed this earthly life to receive her heavenly reward. For 85 years, she touched countless lives through her kindness, wisdom, and loving spirit. Today, we celebrate not only her passing, but a life well lived and a soul now rejoicing in the presence of the Lord.
Betty attended Tomlinson High School through the tenth grade. She took a leave of absence, later returned, and graduated. She had an interesting childhood and young life. She, along with her parents and siblings worked on a farm. That was not an easy task- picking cotton, pulling tobacco and cutting wood. Her father owned a wood yard, sawing and cutting wood to sell. There was always work to be done on a farm, but that is what people did in those days, "Worked."
God and her parents were the first and foremost leaders in her life. Then, came her first love, Eddie White, Sr., whom she married and received five of her greatest blessings. This union was blessed with five biological children: four boys, Eddie White, Jr., Reverend Dr. Frankie White, Russell L. White, and Stencil L. White; and one daughter, Roslyn M. White. She was blessed with nineteen grandchildren and forty great-grandchildren. She considered them "the best of the crop". Another one of her blessing was her marriage to Reverend Charlie C. Gordon on December 21, 1981, while he was Pastor of Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church.
Being a Pastor's wife kept her busy, especially as he was assigned from church to another. Reverend "C.C." Gordon pastored Friendship A.M.E., Trinity A.M.E. Church, and Bethel A.M.E. Church in Gourdine, SC. While at Trinity, Betty was named Area Chairperson of the Annual Conference and 1st Vice President of the Ministers Wives for the Central Conference. While serving at Bethel in Gourdine, the Lord called her husband and companion, Reverend C.C. Gordon, home to be with him. She remained at Bethel-Gourdine for a few years until she decided to return to her home church, Greater Bethel A.M.E. in Kingstree, where she served as President of the Senior Choir and as a Class leader.
Living an working on a farm was not an easy thing to do, but with the help of God, they made it. Upon becoming a young adult, she knew that she would be of more service to her family and herself, so she got "a real job."
After marriage, she went to work. Her first job was at Kelley Memorial Hospital in 1959. She worked as a Tray Line person for six years. Not long after in 1965, the new hospital, Williamsburg Regional Hospital was built. She along with many employees transferred to the new facility where she remained a Tray Line person for a short time, after which she was named supervisor of the Dietary Department. She later became Director of the Dietary Department. The responsibility of the Hospital's Dietary Department was to prepare food for hospital patients and Williamsburg County Professional Women's Foundation. She also prepared food for employees who had bereavement in their families. Her experience as Director of the Dietary Department was rewarding. Over the years, she worked under the leadership of two of the best supervisors ever, Rounetta Joye and Dan Harrington. She received her initial dietician training at Florence Darlington Technical College and later in the state of Florida. She has had the pleasure of catering events throughout this county and several others. One of the most memorable occasions was in Columbia for the Knights of Phythagoras, while they were under the leadership of her late husband, Reverend "C.C." Gordon.
Betty was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Evening Star #246, Kingstree, SC.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by: her son, Eddie White, Jr; her two sisters, Rovenia Mouzon and Margaret Martin; one brother, Sammy McFadden; a niece, Alphie Mack; a nephew, Christopher Burgess; and a friend, who was like a sister, Lena Segars.
She leaves to cherish her memories: three sons, Reverend Dr. Frankie D. (Helen) White and Russell Leon White, both of Kingstree, SC and Stencil (Endia) White of Columbia, SC; one daughter, Rosiland M. Miller of Bronx, NY; one step-son, Water (Lola) Stuckey of Greeleyville, SC; one step-daughter, Mattie Gordon of Pamplico, SC; two sisters, Helen (Robert) Brown and Mary (Al) Burgess, both of Bronx, NY; one brother, Marion McFadden of New Jersey; four step-sisters, Martha Mitchell, Trudie Mae Pearson and Lula Ann Mitchell, all of Bronx, NY and Albertha Knox of Lane, SC; one step-brother, Herbert Mitchell of North Carolina; one sister-in-law, Rosa McFadden of Philadelphia, PA; one brother-in-law, John (Sheila) of Patterson, NJ; nineteen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren; other children she nurtured as her own: Joyce Cooper, Linda Segars, Leroy Segars, Alvin Segars, Donald Woods, Debra Chandler, and the Bufkin family; a special caregiver, Elizabeth Parker; a daughter-in-law, Barbara White; special friends, Ruth George and Rachel Tisdale, both of Kingstree, SC; a special cousin, Millie Fulton of Cades, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
Now Betty and Lena are back together again.
