Life Reflections

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand."

John 10:27-28

Belva Jean Gordon, a loving thoughtful and devoted woman of faith went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

The fifth child born to the late Helen Boyd of Greeleyville, South Carolina was born on December 4, 1953. She was a proud graduate of C.E. Murray High School Class of 1972. Belva was Holy Ghost filled at the age of 9 years old, where people would come to Church on Sunday nights, just to see her shout.

Belva moved to New Jersey after graduation, however seeing the need to care for her brother David, she soon moved back to Kingstree. Here she met and married the love of her life, Marcellus Gordon, who adored her. They have been married for 46 years.

Belva was a caretaker at heart and in 1988 she went back to Nursing School in Norfolk, Nebraska and earned her LPN degree. She worked many private duty cases as well as working for the local nursing homes, Kingstree, Lake City-Scranton, St. Stephen, Omaha Nebraska and Mentor, Ohio, etc. She took such good care and took pride in her patients, always making sure they had what they needed. If they didn't, she would make them things if she could or buy them. She was a God-fearing woman of character, often going out of her way for others without making a show of it. She also worked for Block Drug and Hoffman LA-Roche in New Jersey.

Belva loved the Lord with all her heart, she loved her family unconditionally as well as her neighbors and friends, she also loved to cook. She was always willing to try a new recipe, she was not afraid to try exotic dishes and say, "I didn't try it, but Marcellus says it taste good". Belva loved gardening, she found joy in planting flowers in her yard and sharing a bulb or flowers with a neighbor, friend, or family, but she really loved cooking. Even during her recent sickness, she was talking about when she came home, she was going to have a drive- thru picnic in her yard, where people could come and get food. She loved cooking so much that she converted one of the rooms in her home for a pantry to make sure she had food to cook for those disabled in her community and church family.

Belva loved to travel, as Marcellus was in the military, and they traveled quite a bit. She was always on the go. In 1980, Belva saw the need for the family to get together, and she started the Boyd/Matthews Family Reunion with a cookout in her yard. This has blossomed into a major family event of which we are eternally grateful, and it continues to this day.

Belva was a member of the First Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Inc. in Florence, SC, where she served faithfully in whatever capacity she could, especially in the kitchen/cooking.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her husband, Marcellus; her daughter, Helena; granddaughters, Kaitlyn, Bryonna and Camille; her daughter, Marcie and Kelvin; her sisters, Carolyn (Nathaniel) and Sandra; one brother, Rodney (Giselle); a special brother, Nathaniel Matthews; her sisters-in-law, Mattie Boyd, Sylvia Boyd, Pearl Gordon and Margo Gordon; a brother-in-law, Danzell Gordon; special nephews, Neil and Christopher (her summer babies), nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends; a friend, Vivian Keen. Special thanks to her home caregivers, Laura Matthews, Margaret Jones, Vicki Brown, Ashley Fowler and Nicole Matthews.
