With deepest sorrow we at Henryhand Funeral Home regret to announce the passing of Albert Jenkins Jr., 89, of Lake City, SC, husband of Geronia Jenkins, who passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
Celebrating the Life and Legacy of
Albert Jenkins Jr.
It is with great sadness and profound gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the passing of Albert Jenkins Jr., a beloved and iconic figure in the Lake City, South Carolina, community. Albert departed this life at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of service, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family, neighbors and friends. Albert Jenkins Jr. was born in Lake City, South Carolina on April 22, 1937, to the late Albert Jenkins Sr. and Flossie Cooper of Lake City, South Carolina. He was baptized and attended the Greater St. James A.M.E. church of which he helped build as a young man. Over the years, he remained devoted to his faith and grew into a respected church leader, serving both God and his community with dedication.
Early Years, Love, and a New Beginning
Albert's journey of connection and hard work began early. He was a proud 1955 graduate of Carver High School, Lake City, SC. Following graduation, he moved south to Florida for a short period of time and later north to Jersey City, New Jersey, seeking new opportunities. It was there that destiny intervened, and he met the love of his life, Geronia Jenkins—who, in a beautiful twist of fate, was also from Lake City. The two married and spent several cherished years building their early life together in New Jersey.
In 1962, tragedy struck when Albert's father was killed in a devastating car accident. Guided by love for his Family and a desire to start anew, Albert made the pivotal decision to return home to Lake City. It was this return that set the stage for his decades-long impact on his beloved hometown.
A Jack of All Trades, Master of One – A Pillar of his Community
Upon returning to Lake City, Albert embarked on a career that would make his face one of the most recognizable and trusted in town. Following the passing of his father he proudly carried on the Family tradition by taking the helm of Jenkins Taxi service, owner and operator. For more than 40 years, his taxi was a rolling sanctuary of warm conversation, friendly smiles, and reliable service. He was far more than a driver; he was a trusted confidant and a steady friend to everyone who stepped into his car. Albert safely transported generations of Lake City residents, including hundreds of elementary, middle and high school students to school every day. To many, he was more than a driver – he was a trusted friend and a dependable presence.
But Albert's hands were never idle. He was a true "Jack of all trades"—a man who could fix, build, or run just about anything. Over his lifetime, Albert wore many hats to support his family and uplift his community:
● Taxi Driver and Self Reliant Mechanic: For more than 40 years, Albert operated his trusted taxi service in Lake City. Demonstrating self-reliance and practical skill, he served as his own mechanic with the tremendous help and assistance of late "Tougar Myers",
● Lake City's First Full-Time Firefighter: A brave protector of his community, Albert served as Lake City's historic first full-time black fireman, retiring from the force in 2002 after 20 plus years of dedicated service.
● Local Club Entrepreneur: He proudly owned and operated a local club, the Cabstand, creating a vibrant space for joy, laughter, and community fellowship.
● Independent Sports Enthusiast Facilitator: Among his many interests, he was an avid sports fan and enjoyed working with sports themed ticket games, especially during baseball, basketball and football seasons.
● Painter and Mover: He lent his strength to the moving business and his steady, meticulous hand to professional painting, beautifying many homes throughout the region.
● The Neighborhood Mechanic: If a neighbor's car broke down, Albert was often the first person they called, always ready to get his hands dirty to help someone in need.
Though he jokingly referred to himself as a "master of none," the truth is that Albert mastered the single most important art: the art of loving and serving people.
A Legacy of Admiration
Albert's impact on Lake City extended far beyond his professional roles. He was a man of immense integrity, humor, and boundless compassion. To know Albert was to respect him, and everyone seemed to have a story of how he had helped them. Whenever his family meets members of the public, they are met with endless, heartfelt stories of admiration and gratitude for the way Albert touched their lives. He was, in every sense of the word, a true pillar of the community.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Geronia Jenkins of Lake City, SC; his devoted children, Norman Jenkins {Marquita} of Port St. Lucie, FL, Alvin Jenkins {Wanda} of Port St. Lucie, FL; a dedicated daughter, Angel Jenkins of Decatur, GA. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Marilyn Jenkins of Lake City, SC. He also leaves his cherished grandchildren, Carlos Jenkins {Ana Garcia}, Ashley Jenkins, Jerona Jenkins, Taylor Jenkins {Ashlee}, Timothy Jenkins and Matthew Ryhnes; great-grandchildren, Alayah Jenkins, Ashlyn Jenkins and Taylyn Jenkins; sister, Peggy Wilson of Richmond, VA; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended Family members and dear friends who will forever treasure his memories.
The family is receiving friends and family at 326 Elm Street, Lake City, SC.
All arrangements and professional services have been entrusted to Henryhand Funeral Home of Lake City, SC. 843-354-2292.
