Life Legacy

Verleen Elizabeth Pressley was born on September 30, 1939, one of twelve children, born to the late Kelly Caesar Pressley and the late Elizabeth Castle Pressley. She was called home by her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, where she will join her parents and her late brother, Anthony George Pressley, and her late sister, Betty Ann Cooper.

Verleen became a member of Friendship United Methodist, Nesmith, South Carolina at an early age. Whenever she returned to South Carolina, she always “stopped by” her church home. As late as February 2012, she restored her full membership. She always had a song in her heart, and Little Widows Might Baptist Church in New York City, was where this talent was displayed.

Verleen attended Battery Park High School, and graduated in 1957. After graduating, she went to New York and worked various jobs. Being one of the oldest children, she took on the burden of contributing financially to her family. She was very instrumental in the organizing and planning of subsequent class reunions.

Verleen returned home to South Carolina after retiring from Citibank in New York City, and became a very active member in the community. Her last employment was a part-time job she held at the Nesmith Post Office, Nesmith, South Carolina.

On September 29, 1969, she gave birth to Trina R. Thomas, her one and only much loved and adored daughter. On June 30, 1998, she was given another blessing, a beautiful daughter named Janey C. Sow.

Verleen leaves to cherish and carry on her memory: her two daughters, Trina R. Thomas and Janey C. Sow; her brothers and sisters, Orie A. (James) Oliver, Clarence (Julia) Pressley, Kelly (Janie) Pressley, Jr., Beatrice (Claude) Barber), Caletha (Elijah) Burroughs, Carrie (Zanda) Watson, Harry V. Pressley, Linda P. (Steve) Wilson, Joann (Bobbie) Pressley; two honorary sisters, Mary London and Dina Johnson; she assumed guardianship of, Bernard, Eddie Lee, Alfrieda, Rachel and Luther Bluefort, the children of Eddie Bluefort and the late Teresa Bluefort; along with a host of nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, aunts, uncles and a multitude of family, friends and acquaintances.
