Mrs. Gertrude Burgess Salters, is at peace with God now, rejoicing in her happy, Heavenly Home. On Thursday, June 27, 2013 at her home in Salters, South Carolina. Gertrude slipped away with one of Godís Angels.
Mrs. Gertrude Salters, the daughter of Ruther D. Burgess and the late Thomas Burgess, Sr., was born on December 29, 1946 in Williamsburg County. She was preceded in death by a sister, Janie Ruth Burgess; and a brother, James Allen Burgess. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church. She later joined St. Mary A.M.E. Church, where she worked faithfully as a Stewardess, a Trustee, on the Usher Board and on the Hospitality Committee. Gertrude was also actively involved within the Sunday School Class. She later joined Greater St. John A.M.E. Church.
Gertrude graduated from Blakely High School in 1965. She later met and married the love of her life, Marion D. Salters, Sr. They were united in Holy Matrimony on September 13, 1965. To this union, seven children were born. Two children, Marion D. Salters, Jr. and Janie Salters, preceded her in death. Gertrude was a kind, gentle and loving person. She enjoyed reading the Daily Bread, listening to gospel music and doing crossword puzzles. Gertrude was a homemaker, and she worked part-time as the Site Supervisor with the Summer Lunch Program at the St. Lawrence Community Center. She will be long remembered in the hearts of those privileged to have known her.
Those left to cherish the memories of Gertrude are: her devoted and faithful husband of 48 years, Marion D. Salters, Sr., of the home; five loving children, Barbara J. (Theodis, Jr.) Chandler of Salters, South Carolina, LTC Marion A. (Brenda) Salters of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Pamela D. Salters of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Michelle N. (Milton) Brooks of Florence, South Carolina and Shirley L. (Brian) Salters-Keels of Salters. South Carolina; one additional son-in-law, Demetrius Owens of Lane, South Carolina; her admiring grandchildren, Broderick Chandler, Teiyanna-Chea Chandler, Miranda Salters, Kendra Bethea, Demetrius Owens, Trinatee K.S. Owens, Jada H. Salters, Dontae Owens, Myra D. Salters and Brian A. Keels, Jr.; one adorable great grandson, Kameron A. Chandler; her loving mother, Ruther D. Burgess of Salters, South Carolina; her loving grandmother, Janie Graham of Salters, South Carolina; her devoted siblings, Bruce (Genevieve) Burgess of Kingstree, South Carolina, Thomas (Shirley) Burgess, Jr. of Greensboro, North Carolina, Charles (Maryanne) Burgess of Columbia, South Carolina, Sarah Ann Burgess of Salters, South Carolina, Laura Gamble (Richard) of Hyattsville, Maryland, George (Shirley) Burgess of Salters, South Carolina and Rev. Michael (Beverly) Burgess of Andrews, South Carolina; two brothers-in-law, Allen Dubose of New York, New York and Henry Farmer of Greensboro, North Carolina; four additional sisters-in-law, Carolyn Burgess of New York, New York, Willis Broughton of Trio, South Carolina, Christine Robinson of New York, New York and Martha Farmer of Fayetteville, North Carolina; one aunt, Rev. Maybell Burgess of Salters, South Carolina; two grandaunts, Henrietta Harrison of Salters, South Carolina and Willie Mae Montgomery of Greensboro, North Carolina; along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
